Life is filled with tough decisions, each molding and shaping the final person that you eventually become. No decision should ever be taken lightly. As you get older, those decisions that you make pertaining to life, love, and happiness can have effects that last for a lifetime. Whether or not you trust your own judgment enough to make these decisions, you can stand to benefit from the expertise of a life coach. But before you sign up for a session, you need to know the difference between these professionals and their close cousins: professional therapists. While both help you improve your life and achieve greater happiness, it is important to understand that there are distinct differences between the two.

Patients normally attend therapy sessions in order to get more in touch with their past decisions and life circumstances. The thinking is that the only way to move forward with one's life is to confront the past through counseling or treatment. Therapists take a more medical or remedial approach to doing their jobs, and they often work for different effects that have little to do with career and personal decision-making. In these less emotionally charged areas, more people prefer the help of life coaches or career coaches.

Life coaches are more proactive in helping clients plan for their future. They can help a client get in touch with their interests and translate those preferences into life improvements. They're less reflective and more forward thinking with how they approach their clientele. Similarly, career coaches help their clients devise a plan of action for the future, but deal specifically with professional growth. The two professions are often linked, however, because of how easy it is for psychological improvements to influence professional ones and vice versa.

To determine which of these avenues to pursue, you need to take personal inventory of where you are in life. Are there unresolved issues in your past that you would like to confront, but you're uncertain of how to do so? If so, then you may wish to stick with a therapist. However, if you are tired of living in the past, and you are ready to enact positive change that can lead you to finding the love of your life or that elusive dream job, then you may want to focus more of your efforts on pursuing a personal life coach. Both types of professionals, however, may be beneficial depending on your needs, but in order to know, you need to be honest with yourself and listen to those close to you.

The goal is self improvement, and sometimes the only way to do that is to move forward in setting and reaching goals both now and in the future. Life coaches can help you do just that.
